Alternative Pathways

Practical education is a growing trend within schools and West Island School has recognised that there is a growing demand for courses with an emphasis on work based learning and a practical coursework focus. These types of qualifications are increasingly being recognised and favoured by employers and universities.

 

At West Island School the Advanced Diploma is focused on the BTEC - Level 3 National Certificate and National Award offered in Business, Engineering, Art and Design and Sports and Exercise Science. The programme integrates various work placements throughout the two year course,. Entry to this programme is based on successful completion of either GCSE, with a minimum of four A* to C grades or the BTEC – Level 2 First Diploma.

 

The programme has a strong focus on coursework and ongoing internal assessments; this allows students a more practical approach to their learning. They are able to develop invaluable key skills such as independent learning, organisation, communication, IT, research and interpersonal skills. There are high expectations of students undertaking the Advanced Diploma. Students need to be prepared to think outside the box, be innovative and be interested in the area of chosen study for their individual investigations. They will also be expected to attend a work placement, build commercial awareness and links within their chosen industry.
