IGCSE

The Middle School Curriculum

The curriculum in the middle school consists of iGCSE and GCSE qualifications in the areas detailled below with alternative pathways provided in Science where an Applied Science BTEC option is available.

Core: Mathematics, English Language and Literature, Science, PE, Learning for Life and ICT.

Optional (4 subjects from): Mandarin, Design & Technology (Food Technology), Design & Technology (Graphic Products), Design & Technology (Resistant Materials), Design & Technology (Textiles Technology), Economics, ESL (English as a 2nd language) IGCSE, French, Geography, History, Information and Communications Technology, Media Studies, Music, Physical Education, Religious Studies, Spanish, Drama, Business Studies, Art and Design Spanish, French, EAL and Learning Support. The only limitation is that students study only one technology, though students are also encouraged to study a language to help them prepare for the IB Diploma.

EAL and learning support classes are available to students with specific learning needs. These students are also supported by Educational Assistants who offer in class support in addition to the class teacher.

Many of the courses at KS4 are accredited through the UK General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) or its international equivalent (IGCSE). Last year we have also introduced a Science course for students who prefer a more vocational and practical approach to learning. This is accredited through the BTEC qualification. We are currently looking at other vocational or less academic courses for future years to reflect our cohorts needs further.

Mother tongue provision: Mandarin has grown considerably over the last few years. Students are able to choose first language Mandarin in the lower and middle school as an option. Most able linguists also have the opportunity to study Chinese literature as preparation for Chinese A2 at IB Diploma level. 61% of our students in Yrs 10 & 11 opt to study Mandarin. There are some students who receive first language support (in French, Spanish and Japanese) at the ESF Language Centre and we liaise closely with parents in this regard.
