International Baccalaureate Diploma at West Island School

Within each of these subject areas (links on the left) you can find information about the following aspects of the IB Diploma programme as they relate to each subject  -   

The IB Diploma programme started in September 2007 at West Island School. We are confident that this course will lead to an excellent pre-university level qualification and will also provide students with the skills needed to become independent life long learners,an area which is becoming increasingly important in the often difficult transition between secondary school and higher education.

The IB Diploma programme also encourages students to develop their critical thinking skills, helps to foster an increased awareness of 'international mindedness' and commits students, teachers and parents to the aims ofthe IB Learner Profile (see below). This profile will guide classroom practice in all areas of the IB programme at West Island School.

IB learner profile

IB schools are internationally minded communities, by this we mean their students are learning to become:

Inquirers

Their natural curiosity is nurtured. They acquire the skills necessary to conduct purposeful, constructive research, and become independent active learners. They actively enjoy learning and this love of learning will be sustained throughout their lives.

Critical thinkers

They exercise initiative in applying thinking skills critically and creatively to make sound decisions and approach complex problems.

Communicators

They understand and express ideas and information confidently in more than one language and in a variety of literacies.

Risk-takers

They approach unfamiliar situations with confidence and have the independence of spirit to explore new roles, ideas and strategies. They are courageous and articulate in defending those things in which they believe.

Knowledgeable

They explore concepts, ideas and issues which have global relevance and importance. In so doing, they acquire, and are able to make use of, a significant body of knowledgeacross a range of disciplines

Principled

They have a sound grasp of the principles of moral reasoning. They have integrity, honesty, a sense of fairness and justice and respect for the dignity of the individual.

Caring

They show empathy and compassion towards the needs and feelings of others. They have a personal commitment to action and service to enhance the human condition, and respect for the environment.

Open-minded

Through an understanding and appreciation of their own culture, they are open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and cultures and are accustomed to seeking and considering a range of points of view.

Well-balanced

They understand the importance of physical and mental balance and personal well-being for themselves and others.

Reflective

They give thoughtful consideration to their own learning and personal development. They are able to analyse their strengths and weaknesses in a constructive manner, and act on them.
