A Practical Promise For West Island School Students
The following ideas have emerged from staff and parents as practical promises or commitments we should make to all our students as individual learners under our care. With this commitment comes a responsibility by students to promise to take advantage of these opportunities and to adhere to the expectations the school has of them. This links to and is an appendix to our vision statement.
A Commitment to Internationalism and our Host Culture
- Provide a wide range of languages including the host culture languages in the timetable or after the timetabled day.
- Celebrate Chinese festivals and major cultural celebrations of our school body.
- Discuss cultural view points in lessons.
- Provide mother tongue library books.
- Provide mother tongue support within the curriculum or outside the curriculum.
- Raise awareness of environmental issues.
A Commitment to Creativity, Action and Service
- Provide a whole school Creativity, Action and Service programme to cater for all students
- Provide leadership opportunities in all year groups.
- Provide school, local and international service opportunities including the opportunity for at least one overseas service trip for upper school students and local service opportunities for every year group
A Commitment to Inclusion
- Cater for each child’s learning style.
- Provide access for students with physical disability.
- Provide appropriate curriculum for each learner.
- Celebrate every student’s personal achievements.
A Commitment to Personal Learning
- Provide space and time for independent study in the timetabled day and beyond.
- Provide one to one tutoring.
- Develop the attributes of the learner profile in each student.
