WIS Welcomes the Year of the Monkey in Grand Assembly

To welcome the arrival of the Year of the Monkey, the students and staff of West Island School put on a extravagant assembly packed traditional and modern Chinese performances. The assembly opened up with a message of good luck and prosperity from Ms Craig. She then introduced the start of the celebrations with a magnificent Dragon Dance full performed by students. The performance was professionally performed and had audiences stunned and excited. From here an array of dances including an umbrella dance and a modern dance depicting the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac, both of which were outstanding and beautifully executed. The WIS Chinese orchestra played a number of popular and familiar New Year songs. We had the opportunity to hear poetry in Mandarin which spoke about the historical journey of China followed by songs and music which spoke about celebration and friendship. West Island’s own martial artists took to the stage to perform a few striking acts followed by a live art act and to wrap it all up, an exciting dance by the Language Department.

WIS was also treated to a personal message from Mrs Foxcroft who spoke about the keen qualities of those born in the Year of the Monkey – perseverance, curiosity and intelligence – and how students can apply these traits to their lives.

The assembly was a colourful display of the diverse cultures that make up West Island School. A huge thank you to all the staff and students who took part in the assembly. They spent many hours working to ensure the assembly was entertaining and informative.
