WIS at HK Model United Nations Conference
On 17 and 18 April, West Island School attended this year’s Hong Kong Model United Nations Conference at the Science Park. HKMUN is a student run conference that is open to local and international schools. This year’s conference was one of the best ones yet and we have one of own students, Adrian Tang, to thank for its success. Alongside being part of a Student Board that bought the conference for 23 schools to fruition, Adrian has also been invaluable in preparing and training our delegates and researchers through encouraging courtesy in debate and ensuring a deeper understanding of the conference procedures.
Our delegates passed an outstanding number of resolutions, and through much debate and compromise, managed to form constructive political consensus. Whether it be placing statues on the moon, providing education to children in conflict zones or deciding to nuke a particular country, it was a great honour and pleasure to witness our students taking part in such heated yet constructive debates. In particular, we congratulate the Iceland delegation, represented by Andrea Wong and Mahir Pasha, for their ‘Outstanding Delegation Award’ in the NATO committee. Throughout the conference, it was impressive to witness such clear evidence of the pursuit of a better world for both present and future generations.
Sadly, it was the last year of HKMUN for some of our students as they will be leaving us for university in the coming year. We thank Andre Fajardo, Adrian Tang, Elliott Suen and Harold Lee for their dedication to MUN. We wish our aspiring leaders all the best in their future endeavours!
