Principal’s Message

Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,

Thank you to the Year 7 team for hosting a great evening with Year 7 parents and parents who are new to the school. Following student presentations about CAS (Community, Activity and Service), parents met their child’s tutor again and then attended a PTA hosted gathering on our fifth floor open area. It was a delightful moment to spend time with parents more informally and as always, our PTA team worked hard to create an evening of warmth and friendship. One father I spoke to said he wasn’t going to come due to work commitments and was able to switch things around at the last minute. He told me that he had learned a valuable lesson never to miss an invite from the WIS PTA team. I couldn’t have put it better myself.

As we say to the young people, there are many more students than staff so the community is genuinely what they want to create. Likewise for parents, our community will be as strong as our parent body. Some parents have had to step out of the PTA this year because they no longer have children in the school which has left gaps to be filled. Like your children, I would welcome your support in engaging in your own Community, Activity and Service by donating some time to the PTA. If you are sitting on the fence and not quite sure, please don’t hesitate to call either myself or the PTA to talk things through. The PTA is a very well run machine which is well supported and guided, but we must recruit some new parents. If you are at all unsure, please call contact us so we can talk though the exact commitment. It is very rewarding and the funds raised by the team make an invaluable contribution to the facilities and resources which benefit all our students. Most of all, I believe our PTA provide a real strength to the unique community in this part of Hong Kong. Please do call us on 2819 1962 to express an interest or find out more.

It was also good to meet several parents who were students of ESF schools and have chosen to send their children to WIS too. It is a distinct heritage to be proud of. If you are a parent who has attended an ESF school or WIS yourself, I would be delighted to hear from you to enrich our silver jubilee year at WIS and the golden jubilee of ESF. We have already chosen a logo to focus our minds and Roy Chan has won the design competition with the following entry.

You’ll be seeing much more of this over coming months. Congratulations to all entrants who were thoughtful and reflective about capturing the essence of WIS with their design skills. What our staff really liked in this winning entry was the Dynasty colours which provide the opportunities for student leadership, CAS and our distinct WIS spirit. At this point it would be remiss to not congratulate our Dynasties, Yuan and Tang for raising HKD 32,203.60 at the first Dynasty Day last week. A stunning beginning which will change the lives of many children in our chosen charity projects.

And finally, congratulations to Rehaan Lulla who has won the Hong Kong Secondary School Muay Thai Boxing Championship. Rehaan practices for two hours each day to achieve his success. His consistent effort is to be highly commended.

I wish you all a restful mid-Autumn break.

Yours,

Christopher Sammons
