WIS at Tournament of the Minds 2017
On Saturday 6 May, WIS attended the Tournament of Minds Final hosted by Kowloon Junior School. WIS entered 1 team in the Maths Engineering category, and 2 teams in the Social Science category.
Both teams were given a long term challenge to prepare for six weeks before the event. The Social Science challenge involved taking the perspective of a group of archaeologists in Pompeii, who discovered a pod containing two items that look the same but are fundamentally different. They must decide when the pod was buried, who buried it and for what reason.
The Maths Engineering challenge involved designing and building a device which tests whether items confirm to the ‘golden ratio’ to meet the ‘Lord High Council’s’ standards.
All teams also faced an unseen spontaneous challenge, to test their ability to think creatively and on their feet.
WIS team 1 were awarded the Maths & Engineering Secondary Division Champions, and WIS team 3 were victorious in the Social Science category. WIS team 2 were also awarded a special ‘Spirit of TOMs’ award for the support and teamwork they demonstrated on the day.
Special thanks to Ms Kitson and Ms Gilbert who supported the activity with me, and special credit given to the students who are not allowed any outside assistance with the challenge. It was a great day all round – with exceptional levels of creativity and problem solving demonstrated from all involved.
