Principal’s Message
Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,
After a nervous day on Wednesday, heightened by the typhoon, students finally received their full sets of iGCSE results. There was a lot of joy during the afternoon on Thursday and I believe celebrations went into the evening. Rightly so as our students have made great progress. 94% of students achieved A%-C overall. 49% of grades were A*-A and 78% were A*-B. Congratulations to students, teachers and families for such a successful moment to cheer.
Congratulations to Ethan Saw who continues to gain recognition for his debating skills during international competitions. Last weekend Ethan took part in debates sponsored by the Faculty of Languages & Cultures, Kyushu University and International Society for Teaching Debate. Facing Japan’s best debaters and covering a wide variety of philosophical and mainstream debates, Ethan was awarded third prize in the Rookie/Novice category in a competition of over 140 participants.
In Maths, I would like to commend Anna Wu whose results for the UK Maths Challenge also came in this week. Out of 300,000 worldwide, she is placed in the top 50 for her achievements. Exceptional performance Anna, well done.
And in the Arts, we would all like to congratulate Nicholas Yu. After demonstrating his ballet ability during whole school assembly last year, Nicholas has been selected as one of four boys to play ‘Benji’ in Priscilla Queen of the Desert. We have included details of his part and specific performance dates should you wish to support him in his endeavours. For the moment, good luck tonight Nicholas at the HK Cultural Centre as part of Don Quixote.
It is a delight to share the pictures for our Chinese immersion trip to Xi’An from June. WIS Chinese scholars had a great opportunity to spend six days experiencing the culture, history and food of Xi’An. Thank you to our Chinese teachers for organising such an enlightening tour of this important part of China’s culture, history and economy. Next year’s visit is already in the diary, details to follow soon.
Finally, having just entered for the ESF 50th Anniversary Marathon on 22 October it would be nice to have some company alongside me to represent WIS; running or walking is just as good. A number of WIS teaching staff will be there as well as students and community members. The link to sign up is included here and there are still 57 days to get some training together!
