Avian Influenza (H7N9) Update

Dear Parents,

As Hong Kong has confirmed its fourth case of human infection of Avian Influenza A (H7N9) this winter and in view of the risks related to H7N9, the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health has advised the following precautions for students and staff.

Please talk to your children about the following to prevent Avian influenza:

  • Avoid visiting wet markets with live poultry, touching poultry, birds or their droppings. Infected birds or their droppings may carry avian influenza viruses
  • Wash hands thoroughly with liquid soap in case of contact with poultry, birds or their droppings
  • Keep hands clean and wash hands properly especially before touching eyes, nose and mouth
  • Cover nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing, disposing tissues in a covered bin
  • Poultry and eggs should be thoroughly cooked before eating
  • Maintain good personal and environmental hygiene and good indoor ventilation
  • Seek medical advice early if fever or respiratory symptoms develop. Remain at home until 48 hours after fever has subsided and condition has improved

More information on Avian Influenza is available on the CHP website: http://www.chp.gov.hk

Yours sincerely,
