WIS Win Big at Tournament of the Minds
Last Saturday, April 23, West Island along with twelve other schools took part in the Tournament Of Minds regional final at Kowloon Junior School. This tournament involves presenting a dramatic, creative solution to an open ended long term challenge that students prepared for over a period of six weeks. This competition requires and aids in developing a diverse skill-set some of which include time management, cooperation, commitment and out of the box thinking. TOMS is broken up into three divisions: Social Sciences, Maths and Engineering, and Language Literature. Three teams from WIS took part: two teams in Social Sciences and one in Maths and Engineering.
This year for the Social Science challenge, students were given a list of notable names in history and had to choose three of the given to compete in a reality show with one of them being erased from history. The consequences of this person being removed from history had to be explored. On the day, students also had to respond to a spontaneous challenge where they were given the challenge with only four minutes to discuss before presenting to the judges for one minute. For the third year running, WIS was named the victor in the Social Sciences division and the team was awarded the trophy. The WIS team now stands a chance to take part in the Australasian Pacific finals later in the year.
On behalf of all participating teams, I would like to thank Ms Clarke for being our TOMS facilitator.
