Chinese Immersion Trip to Xi’An, China

On 25 to 30 June 2017, the WIS Chinese students had a great opportunity to spend 6 days in Xi’An. This cultural excursion trip was a trip that allowed students to open our eyes to both the rich Chinese cultural and historical significance of Xi’An. During the trip, students visited authentic cultural heritage sites; a refreshing experience that reminded students of the groundbreaking achievements of our ancestors.

Locations such as the Tang paradise, and the Tang towers displayed the engineering ingenuity of the era, as well as political and natural disasters that these structures have survived through. While touring the Buddhist Temple, situated under the larger Tang Tower (大唐塔) students were amazed by not only the preserved structures, but also the evolution of calligraphy styles. The geography of Xi’An mountains was interesting: an exploration of the wonderful geography of China. During meal times, students were also able to learn about Chinese food culture, even having the opportunity to watch chefs make traditional Chinese Lanzhou Ramen (兰州拉面) from scratch.

While on the bus between locations, students also listened to the tour guide talk about interesting facts about Xi’An. Students learned about how Xi’An was the capital of 13 different kingdoms and dynasties. Students also visited the Bell tower (the ‘morning call’ of ancient times) and Drum tower (where the signal of the end of the day is broadcast); learning about the lifestyle of ancient civilizations. At historical landmarks, students were even able to do some workshops and experience what it was like to be both an archaeologist of modern times, and terracotta makers of ancient times.

Furthermore students were able to experience the diversity of the modern China through locations such as the Muslim Street. There, we were able to practise our Chinese language abilities while bargaining for the best prices! While biking through the ancient city walls, students also learnt about the significance of architectural features such as inward sloping floors to preserve water.

The trip was a great opportunity for our students to be immersed authentically in the Chinese culture and way of life.
