Digital Literacy Days – Student Reflections
West Island School came together for yet another edition of Digital Literacy Days. Instead of the normal timetabled lessons, students spent their time focused in individual faculties undertaking faculty oriented, highly technical, digitally based project activities. These activities have been carefully planned and developed by a specialist technology teachers based in each of the participating faculties. It was a great three days with many great skills learned and many great creations. Student reflections are below:

For 2 of our Digital Literacy days this year, we were with the Creative Arts faculty. We focused on the themes of identity and contrast and we created 2 final images on Photoshop. We had the creative freedom to try different techniques and styles. All the images we used had to be our own, even backgrounds and textures. We had the opportunity to sign up to different workshops with different teachers that would support and help our final pieces. For my piece, I included a drawing and an old photo with lots of collage and layering as part of the background. It was great to explore all the possibilities with Photoshop.

During Digital Literacy Days this year, I really enjoyed the language day which was French for me. I am fluent in French so it was fun using my first language to voice over a very well known TinTin scene. I found that this was an enjoyable experience because it allowed me to interact with my peers for a whole day and it taught me to how to use this language to talk over movies. Overall I enjoyed this day a lot and would happily do it again.

During the three days of Digital Literacy, we explored numerous digital formats in which we could present our learning in English and Foreign Languages. In English, we created a Digital Analysis of a poem, using a website that allowed us to link images and videos to specific words so that we could analyse it in more depth. This was not only beneficial for Year 11 where we will be studying poetry for our exams, but it was also great as we could experiment with a different, more modern type of analysis that we had never experienced before. Also, I really enjoyed the French Digital Literacy day, because we did a voice over of Tintin. I found it very useful as I was able to put my French skills into a more colloquial context, and it was also amusing to make dialogue for the film characters!

Last Thursday during Digital Literacy Days, Year 8 went to climb Dragons Back. The reason for climbing Dragons Back was to find use of technology in our daily lives of fitness. We were expected to use mobile apps like Google Maps and others to measure heart rate, how many steps we took and how many calories we burnt.
But don’t worry Dragons Back isn’t all just about 2 – 3 hour hike because there’s light at the end of every tunnel and in this case it’s the beach! You get to spend the rest of your school day at the beach with your friends, and hop into the water and enjoy the sun and sand!
We had great fun using and learning about new apps and checking in with our friends. Not only that but surprisingly the hike was also fun! You wouldn’t wanna miss it!

I thoroughly enjoyed this unit because it’s taught us how to use different programmes and has been unimaginably fun. The whole idea of creating an artwork that represents your identity was very inspiring.
