Home Visit Service for the Local Elderly
Last month, four NGOs in Hong Kong organized large scale home visit to the elderly at Shek Pai Wan Estate in Aberdeen. More than 70 volunteers participated, including four WIS students – Marcus Cheung, Matthew Ha, Timothy Yuen and Neil D’cunha. This service is part of the ‘Home in Shek Pai Wan,’ project, which aims at helping newly arrived residents adapt to the new environment, building up a caring neighbourhood network and fostering a harmonious community.
Prior to the service, students were briefed on the residents’ background at the Estate, the aging population in Hong Kong and common challenges faced by them, elderly policy in Hong Kong as well as some practical techniques and issues to pay attention to, during the visit. They were split into 2 groups and worked alongside some of the local students to visit six households. During the visit, they greeted and chatted with the elderly residents, and presented them with gift packs of food and daily necessities. The residents were really happy and felt the warmth of WIS students’ concern and care.
West Island School greatly appreciates the students’ service to the local elderly community in Hong Kong!
