ID Student Insight: Rebecca Fawdry
My name is Rebecca Fawdry and I take a major Art, a minor Performing Arts, the Extended Project Qualification, and IB SL English Language Literature.
The BTEC program does not only utilise an applied learning approach, but allows those who study it to individually while they take on challenges with a professional and highly disciplined manner. Through studying in the BTEC program, you are able to experience and develop work mimicking what it would be like in that specific industry, preparing you fittingly for a future in that industry.
Being one of very few who went back and forth on my decision to take IB or BTEC, I finally made my decision to carry out the BTEC program. As a person who is completely interested in the more creative side of academics, and whose ambitions are to go to one of the top art schools in the UK, the BTEC course seemed perfect. I am able to utilise 12 hours of the 7 day cycle to focus solely on my art work, and build up a set of skills and a portfolio that embodies that. I am also able to express my love for the performing arts without the stress of exams or other subjects that I do not feel are my strong points. By taking the BTEC course, I am able to feel confident in the work I produce and the future I want for myself ahead of me.
By taking the Extended Project Qualification I was able to put myself in a real life commission, where I created the designs for the school’s second ever charity fashion show, Impulse 2.0. I found myself quickly, learning the way in which the design industry works, through the stress of deadlines, working in a team and the importance of clients needs. With the ability to take on standard level IB subjects, you are able to expand on your learning in subjects that are not offered in BTEC.
I have thoroughly enjoyed the BTEC course so far, and am excited to see how I progress further in the next two years.
