Improving Mental Health in schools
Mind HK, an initiative formed out of the Patient Care Foundation, and Charlie Waller Memorial Trust (CWMT), one of the leading charitable organisations in the UK, held a workshop at West Island School on Oct 29, as part of the Coolminds Speaker Series. The objective was to help raise awareness about the importance of mental health among young people in Hong Kong Schools. The workshop was attended by WIS staff and parents, and was followed by a Q&A session.
Teresa Day, Director, Schools and Families Programmes, CWMT discussed how a whole-school approach – that involves the entire school community including parents, teachers, staff and care givers, can work together to help with youth wellbeing in multiple contexts. She also discussed evidence based ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’, and ideas about how this could be integrated effectively into the Hong Kong schools’ system. Teresa used case examples submitted from Hong Kong educators and students to illustrate the implementation of the whole-school framework in schools. Her proposals were based on extensive experience in the UK setting.
