Principal’s Message
Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,
Last weekend was busy.
It started well as we said a final farewell to Year 13 with parents at the Formal. Students gave speeches and prizes to celebrate their time together and the long-awaited end of exams.
Congratulations also to Tom Shirley and his team who supported his testimonial match on Sunday. Tom took two great penalties for a final victory after playing full time in 32 degrees heat – impressive to the end Tom, well done.
Huge congratulations to the Junior ESF Chef winners, West Island’s very own Kyan Tomordy & James Liang in Year 9. They had rave reviews about their red mullet with soy sauce meringue, Matcha Tiramisu with red bean paste, achieving top marks for teamwork in the Grand Final held at South Island School. The brief was to create a two course meal, suitable to serve at a Hong Kong restaurant, for a budget of under $200 using local, sustainable produce. Judges included ESF CEO Belinda Greer, Owner/Founder of Butchers Club, Johnny Glover and Brett Carter, a finalist in MasterChef Australia.
Congratulations also to Winston Lam who took part in the final of the HK Brain Bee competition on neuroscience last week and won 3rd place in Hong Kong! He had to get through 4 rounds competing against students from Diocesan Boys’ and St Paul Co-Ed to emerge with a trophy.
Ten students from West Island took part in the AISMUN IX conference, hosted by the Australian International School. After three days of debate with proposal and counter proposal, solutions were reached on current Global issues. All were successful and special mention to Marcus Cheung who won the award for the most diplomatic delegate in the Human Rights Council.
I also heard from Kamakshi Bhavnani and her Innovation Team for their attention given to the Sustainable Development Goals. Kamakshi and team have researched the growing incident of diabetes in Hong Kong and the global community, informing their design of a new app to assist people who live with the condition. A combination of thorough research, high quality thinking and programming expertise resulted in second prize in the Technovation Hong Kong finals. To compete against 108 other Hong Kong teams at such a young age deserves high praise.
Well done to the team and best of luck to them as they now await global results.
Yours,
Christopher Sammons
