Principal’s Message
Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,
Welcome back to experienced and new parents!
Coming back to Hong Kong after the summer is always a great feeling but returning to West Island is the most joy. New staff have settled into their roles and it seems like they have always been with us (more introductions next week) and new students are enjoying finding their way around both the building and our routines.
I am truly grateful to ESF who have funded some further renovation work over the summer – we have a well-designed and bright G&A area, with the addition of four counselling rooms, a nurses room and well-being studio. We have created a purpose built computer studio, language classrooms and new IT support centre in D block. After several years of summer works, the whole school has now been updated and we will move our attention to the auditorium and sports areas for further growth.
Students achieved so well in their summer IB results. We aim for each student to achieve their personal best and whilst the average IB scores are impressive (6 points ahead of the world average) there are some amazing stories of persistence, overcoming adversity and growth which continue to amaze us. Students who took BTEC courses have achieved equally well and the list for ESF Chairman’s awards was longer than usual for students who took this pathway. My respect and admiration to you all West Island Alumni. I will update you on the final destinations list next week as well as our GCSE results – truly inspiring.
My sincere thanks to the PTA who have worked hard over the last few weeks to support parents with uniform and bus passes, we couldn’t do it without them. For any new parents to the school please get in touch for ways you can assist them as more hands make light work and it is a great way to get to know our community.
Reminders too that our Open Day is September 18 for any families or friends you know that may be interested in joining us. Sign up will open shortly and this is a good opportunity for prospective and existing parents to take a tour of the newly developed areas.
For students, remember dressed for best on 27 and 28 August as our school photographs on those days. Final schedule will be released and communicated to the school community early next week.
Can’t wait to reacquaint in the next few weeks and here’s to a good year ahead.
Happy weekend!
Yours,
Christopher Sammons
(Principal)
