Principal’s Message
Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,
Thank you to the PE Faculty who have organised swim heats throughout the week. The preparation will serve us well for the Swim Gala & Sports Festival on Friday 21 September and I look forward to seeing students and parents on the day.
It has also been inspiring to see so many students running up Sandy Bay Road on Thursday morning as part of their morning fitness. Friday too, with 90-120 participants all starting their morning with a burst of physical activity either in the gym or in the pool, great for our well being. Mr Hewson has also been focused on extending well being practices for Year 10 and 11 with a series of activities to break from the academics and get us focused on our social and emotional learning; to stop and reflect on what we do for our own peace of mind. Yoga, pilates, meditation, art, music, journaling have been just a few of the offerings for this term.
This week Year 9 will have received information about Limitless. The programme is new and unique to ESF for learning outside the classroom. Over six weeks, 40 students from ESF secondary schools will pursue their learning in the Australian outback and apply themselves to real-life problems in an unfamiliar environment. A life changing opportunity for students who may wish to challenge and extend themselves in leadership and self-discovery.
A reminder to parents that we have a number of Higher Education events which have been planned by the Post 16 Higher Education & Careers team. These include information about studying in the UK and Singapore. All students and their parents are welcome to see how we nurture students higher and further education inquiry. Once again, it will be a real honour to have the National University of Singapore visiting us. The schedule is as follows:
• 12 September, 1:20pm-2:10pm (5/F: Mindfulness Studio): Spotlight on Undergraduate studies in Singapore
• 17 September, 2:30pm-3:30pm (5/F: Mindfulness Studio): Imperial College London
• 18 September, 12 noon to 2:00pm (3/F: Multipurpose Halls 1 & 2): British Council Universities’ Roadshow and other universities (Open Day parents are welcome to join to see how WIS nurtures students’ higher and further education research/inquiry and planning). Further information can be found on http://wiscareers.weebly.com/
Finally, after the successful introduction of an online parent evening booking system with Year 7, we are extending this to all year groups. The first parent evening for Year 13 is on Thursday 4 October and instructions will come to parents shortly about signing up. Preliminary information is available here. We look forward to seeing you there.
Enjoy a great weekend.
Yours,
Christopher Sammons
