Principal’s Message
Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,
On Saturday, I was pleased to watch Freya Boerner compete in the English Speaking Competition at the RTHK. Along with other secondary schools, Freya completed a two minute speech with the title ‘I wonder’ and improvised with a random three words. It was great to see Freya’s wit, humour and humanity shine through. Well done to you.
At the same time, West Island students excelled themselves in the HKSSF cross country finals and were the winners for boys, girls and the competition overall. West Island School were placed in the top three for six of the eight age groups represented. For teams, there were four champions and every team was placed in the winners table which is remarkable.
Wherever students were placed, we are very proud of their participation in the sport and personal achievement.
Congratulations this week to Andrew McNaughton and Lucia Bolton for being awarded the Edward Youde Memorial Prize. Both have been awarded a small cash sum in recognition of their high standards of learning and leadership attributes. Richly deserved both.
It should not have escaped your attention that our Spring Fair is coming up quickly now and students have been asked to sell raffle tickets. The funds from this year will be much needed to assist with the renovation of our auditorium planned from April – Dec 2019. More than that, 20% of the ticket sales are donated to the Society for the Relief of Disabled Children which are a long term partner of our community. HK$50,000 has been pledged to assist Jockey Club Sarah Roe school who need to purchase a specially adapted minibus. Many of our community here have sons and daughters who benefit from the care of our sister ESF school. With only seventy families to support their fundraising efforts, we hope this contribution from WIS will go some way to assist them.
Proceeds from the raffle go a long way in the Hong Kong community and the prizes this year are exceptional. A six person holiday including flights to Chamonix (worth HK$80,000), Apple Store Vouchers (worth HK$8,000) and a weekend at the Kerry Hotel (worth HK$3,900). The PTA have really excelled themselves on our behalf. Thank you PTA committee.
A call for you and your children to ring around the family, hassle work colleagues, knock on neighbours doors and make a special effort for us during this year’s raffle. Please let us know if you can sell more – everything is going to such good causes.
If I win the Chamonix prize, I promise now to return it to the next ticket holder – your odds of winning have just improved already.
Have a great weekend.
Yours,
Christopher Sammons
(Principal)
