Principal’s Message
Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,
Shout out to Megan Ng who received Gold Award from the Royal Commonwealth Society for her entry to the 2019 essay competition. In a truly inspiring piece of writing Megan considers how young people might come to understand themselves and their place here and now. “Finding your culture isn’t as simple as naming a word. It takes a journey, an exploration of the world around you.” From Year 8, Megan demonstrates herself to be wise beyond her years and to possess an incredible voice in her written work. “Your culture is your home, but home is not always where you come from. Sometimes, it’s where you’ve been or where you’re going.”
Words were also powerfully sung this week. The whole school was struck by the beauty of Kiara Nothhaft’s singing and lyrics as she performed her own piece during assembly about over-thinking being overrated. It was a stunning piece and to demonstrate such confidence after only just joining us was great to see. During the assembly we talked about being agents of change and demonstrated how much plastic we had saved since August by bringing our own cutlery. Our composter is going strong and we can now supply Kennedy School garden as well as our own. There is some work to go in educating ourselves about what can and can’t be digested and this term will be about connecting our small actions to the wider world when we get this right!
Remember to nurture yourself this weekend. Living with the background of protests can elevate your stress levels to a new normal so that things which normally feel fine, can add to us in unexpected ways. As a parent, it can be hard to share enough information so that children don’t fill in the blanks themselves whilst not oversharing unnecessary fears and worries. Check in with yourself and family, of course don’t hesitate to contact us if you would like some support or have any concerns that might be occurring.
We have the annual swim gala next Friday and a reminder here that students are involved with activities during the morning. Buses will leave for home from 1pm.
Happy weekend!
Yours,
Christopher Sammons
