Principal’s Message
Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,
“Food, glorious food” as the Oliver musical goes. I have just finished being on the panel of judges for the first ever WIS Bake Off. I have tasted some amazing cakes and have been most impressed by the creativity shown by our learners. Hats off to two entrants in Song and Qing who have created cakes as the West Island School logo; they look stunning, Parissa and Lily. Gayatri’s cake entered for Han is one of the most imaginative, created as a melting chocolate ice-cream. Michael, as part of Tang, baked Halloween and in keeping with an autumn theme, Coleman has baked perfect and tasty mooncakes. Ming’s red-velvet cakes are also in keeping with the finest of Hong Kong traditions. Parents have been equally creative and Frond Lui’s three tiers is closely matched by the Holy Grail strawberry mousse cake. The groups are equally impressive and I think we will need to reinforce our desks for the incredible Oreo Berry cake entered by Giselle and Radhika. Sometimes the job of a Principal is really tough.
The bake off entries are as diverse as our students and I can only apologise for not mentioning you all. I am looking forward to the announcement of winners for the next round and can say that any attempt to influence Mrs Craig by the provision of additional personal cupcakes on Monday has been fully declared to the rest of the judging panel. West Island, you have done your Dynasties proud today and you should be really pleased with your achievements. A huge thank you to both parents and students who have gone to great expense and time.
The rest of the day has been equally exciting as one of the first Dynasty Days this year to raise money for our overseas charities visited in Horizons Week. Yuan and Tang have organised a whole range of lunchtime activities including a Zumba flashmob and aerobics to work off the cake. We will keep you posted on how well they have done and the money raised.
You may recall that Annette Chan was celebrated recently for her ice-skating achievements in the Asian Juniors during August. We received news this week that she will be mentored by Geoffrey Cheah who has competed in this year’s Rio Olympics. It is great to see our Alumni nurturing the next generation of talent at West Island School. Good luck to you both in reaching such excellence in your sports.
With regard to our Alumni, many of you will know that this year marks the 25th Anniversary for West Island School and we are preparing a celebration theme so we can mark the occasion with the distinction it deserves. If any past or current parents and Alumni would like to be involved or simply suggest how we might do this, your thoughts would be gratefully received by our Communications Officer, Roshni Mulchandani (roshni.mulchandani@wis.edu.hk).
I hope you enjoy a great weekend.
Yours,
Christopher Sammons
