Principal’s Message

Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,

The Swimming Gala was an exceptional day last week and it was good to see so many parents supporting us. The weather was perfect and student involvement in both races and the sports events is to be commended. There were some excellent individual performances from everybody, both in the competitive heats and for those who were willing to swim to get credits for their houses. The final winners on the day were Han (1st place) followed by Ming (2nd place) and Song (3rd place). Congratulations for your commitment West Island School, and in particular thanks to Mr Madden for organising such a well-run event. You can view photos from the Swim Gala here and from the Sports Festival here, and the highlights video here.

It has been a privilege this week celebrating a number of other achievements. Michael Leifer has been awarded Swimmer of the Month for his excellent application and consistent attendance at training. So too, Scott Bruce who has made every training session developing his fitness and performance. He has been recognised for Runner of the Month.

Zarah Tesfai was equally jubilant this week for being in the top 1% of students worldwide for the National SAT Merit Scholarship Program. Zarah has been placed in the top 16,000 out of 1.6 million applicants worldwide and will now continue into the semi-final round for a university scholarship. This is exceptional performance as a result of continuous application over the last five years

Finally, a huge thank you to the PTA committee and the many hands which made last year’s School Fair such a success. We have accepted a cheque from the PTA for HKD 310,000 to purchase learning resources this academic year, further improving our resources and teaching. The efforts of all the community are to be praised and on behalf of our teachers and learners, a huge thank you.

It has been a great start to the year and I know that both students and staff will be looking forward to some well-deserved rest and recuperation. Have an enjoyable time together.

Yours,

Christopher Sammons
