Principal’s Message

Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,

As we have continued in our normal routines to bring sense and comfort this week, it is heartening to see that our students have been quietly accomplishing many feats in representing their school.  West Island hosted South Island School for a friendly debating competition on Thursday evening. The juniors debated “artificial intelligence” while the seniors argued about the concept of “fake news and its effect on democracy”. It was a great event and my thanks to Ms Boesenberg for her support.

Last Friday, West Island took part in the ESF 50th Anniversary Secondary Schools Olympics. They did exceptionally well and were supported by the PE faculty who were involved in the training and selection process. Well done to all students who took part in the celebration of sport across ESF.

It was Han and Ming Dynasty Day on Friday 17 February. From dance performances to constructing a movie theatre and hosting a Cupcake Challenge, Dynasty Leaders did an incredible job creating a lunchtime of entertainment while raising funds for their allocated charities. The day raised $23,125.40 HKD for Food Angels and Crossroads; both of which assist in improving the life of the disadvantaged. Well done to all the Dynasty Leaders and bakers for putting on a scrumptious array of baked goods.

As we continue to celebrate ESF’s 50th Anniversary, the Foundation hosted a Secondary Schools Concert on Wednesday 22 February. WIS students represented the school well as they featured in a number of solo and group performances. Well done to all the performers and our thanks to Mr Jolly and Ms Dalgarno.

Thursday 2 March is World Book Day and we are inviting all students and staff to dress up as their favourite literary characters. There will be an opportunity to exchange books among other activities taking place throughout the day. I look forward to seeing students reading for joy and dressing up in a variety of fun costumes.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the PTA Quiz Night this evening, and I am told it promises to be a competitive and enjoyable event.

Yours,

Christopher Sammons
