Principal’s Message

Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,

Thank you in advance for all the raffle ticket sales and your generosity at our School Fair tomorrow. The proceeds make a significant impact on the quality of our teaching and learning environment. In particular, I would like to thank Mr Darton and Mr Drew for their company’s involvement. Tanner De Witt Law Firm was established in 1999 as an independent law firm in Hong Kong and I am very grateful for their kind sponsorship of this year’s fair.

There are many students to celebrate this week because of their remarkable effort. Nikhil Joseph has become a full member of the Hong Kong Academy of Gifted Education (HKAGE). Having completed both his online programme and student seminars, he is one of the youngest to achieve this success at West Island School. Our Mathematics Faculty also supported a group of learners to attend the South East Asian Maths Competition held in Jakarta during the weekend. We were very pleased to be represented so ably.

Scott Bruce also received recognition for his winning design of the 2017 ESF Chef Competition. The logo was judged against all other school entries and will be used for the foundation wide competition and aprons throughout the year. We just need to bring home the cup and I look forward to a West Island winner in the baking heats.

Meeting with Year 11 and Year 13 parents this week was great and allowed us to share ideas for supporting young people who face challenges. Attended by a student counsellor, an Educational Psychologist and our pastoral teams, we discussed a range of factors that impact young people and the ways in which we can respond to our own and other’s emotions. We will look to share the resources and provide a further workshop on mindfulness for adults as well as opening up these talks to parents of other year groups.

It may have escaped some parents that we didn’t hold a Christmas Concert in December due to the early break. Instead, our annual concert featuring a range of performances and to commemorate our 25th Anniversary will be held on Wednesday 29 March. Tickets are reasonably priced at $25 without limit to your individual orders and include refreshments. I look forward to seeing you there and listening to some great performances.

Yours,

Christopher Sammons
