Principal’s Message

Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,

The last few weeks of the year are going to be as busy as the beginning.

Covering a range of topics and styles of performance, students participated in thought provoking pieces as part of the Drama and Dance Creative Slam. We would like to thank Faust International for judging the wide range of entrants and for rewarding the first place winners, Celeste Delchy and Carys Caldwell, with complimentary workshops. On Wednesday this week, Pre 16 students also took part in a Drama and Dance Showcase to perform original monologues and explore physical theatre techniques.

Other firsts this week go to Amy Tao who has been awarded the Grantham Outstanding Athlete award by the HKSSF for Cross Country. Amy is fast indeed and has accumulated some impressive times for the whole season. Other awards go to James Karton for Rugby and Erin Brown. Both are to be equally commended for their stand out success within the league. Overall, Erin was also nominated and awarded Sportsgirl of the Year. We wish them well at their medal ceremonies later this month.

In English, Pearl Ng will be attending the ICAS Award Ceremony in Hong Kong to receive a gold medal for achieving the highest writing score in Hong Kong and Macau region. A real honour and something which has not happened at West Island for a few years now. I also wish to commend Aditya Shrisankaraan who has been accepted to Johns Hopkins University over the summer period to study Astrophysics. As part of the Gifted Learners programme, Aditya has shown great promise and motivation in his studies – including some impressive drumming leadership.

If that wasn’t enough, West Island School bought home no less than four cups from this week’s ESF biathlon held at KGV. We made a clean sweep in Year 7 and Year 8 boys and girls teams. They all received a hearty round of applause from their teachers in this morning’s briefing for their success.

Stand out winners this week have been our students from the Learning Support Centre. Last night we were treated to the graduation of three students who will now move from West Island to further education courses. We were provided with presentations, food, drink, dancing and good humour. Last year’s graduates returned for the party and students joining from Year 6 were also included; it was a real pleasure to welcome them to our family. We wish Aman, Wesley and Benley the very best for the future. All three of these boys have made our daily life more fun and enriching and they deserve every future success.

Looking forward to the summer three West Island students will be heading to Los Angeles for Yachting World Championships. Lewis Clark and Dylan Richards will be sailing together and Karrie Clark, (the youngest and only female competitor from the island) will be representing Hong Kong.
We wish them well for the practice over the next fortnight.

Yours,

Christopher Sammons
(Principal)
