Principal’s Message
Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,
I am pleased to let you know that Aparna Kanda and Michael Botelho have been nominated for the prospective School Councilor vacancy. As there is only one vacancy, I will be writing to all parents on Monday to ask you to place your vote using Gateway. The electronic system will also provide further candidate information to help you make your decision.
During our first week back, I let you know that Aminah Nihal was selected to represent West Island (and Hong Kong) during a visit to the United Nations in New York; she has shared both her experience and the speech she gave this week. It was a real tribute to be selected as the only High School student amongst other university graduates attending the conference.
Shaping the world is important for all young people and following in Aminah’s footsteps are Steph Choi and Neil Sadarangani who have been invited to join the Youth Consultative Group on Racial Equality and Integration. These commendable students will be working alongside the Hong Kong Government under the umbrella of the Equal Opportunities Commission. Both Steph and Neil were chosen after a series of presentations and interviews. We wish them good fortune in learning and contributing to Hong Kong equality law.
A further pleasure for me to congratulate Clifford Ho this week who has taken part in a Hong Kong wide Chinese speech competition. Clifford was placed as first runner-up in the category of Three Character Canon三字經 amongst many native speakers. Well done to Clifford on getting so far.
There are a number of important dates to mark in your diary over the next few weeks. We are delighted to welcome the National University of Singapore to WIS for their first visit. The university is ranked 1st in Asia and 15th in the World so it is a real honour for them to be with us on 11 September. The following week will be important for any families who are beginning their research about future university pathways in the UK. A large number of universities will be represented at WIS on 19 September at the UK Education Roadshow by British Council. The following day is our Open Day which is for prospective parents, however, you are most welcome if you wish to visit and see the school in action.
And of course, the marathon is calling to you all…
Happy training to you all,
Christopher Sammons
(Principal)
