Principal’s Message
Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,
Annette Chan of Year 12 has continued to enjoy success in her ice-skating representing Hong Kong in the Elite Asian Junior Figure Skating Challenge. Annette told me that she has tried her best and won third place. Skating is a precision sport and it has been heartening to see Annette gain more and more over the years of her practice. A great achievement.
Similar success was enjoyed in the HKSSF Swimming Heats which took place last week. I have been shown the achievement of West Island who have gained 154 points overall. There are some exceptional personal bests and overall we have gained second place out of 16 Hong Kong schools. A and C Grade both won gold in their relays – exceptional team effort WIS students and coaches.
Another great team effort on Sunday last week. Along with staff and families from across the territory, there were 70 representatives from West Island School who entered the ESF’s 50th Anniversary Marathon. It was great to see two West Island Students gain first and second place in the 6K run. Congratulations to both Swiss and Ernest for their achievements and thank you to all families who turned out to support us.
Our annual Diwali Ball was eventful this year for different reasons and we enjoyed some unexpected Diwali dhoop on our closing night. The sari’s looked exceptional and that was just the audience, many of whom could have actually been in the show itself (watch this space for next year). Dancing came thick and fast, as did the gags and the laughter. I was particularly impressed with the number of male students who got involved and of course, the final tribute goes to Anjali, Gargi and Ms Hannaford who have pushed and pulled us all into shape. I have no idea what you will do with your time now it’s over. Photos from the Diwali Ball can be viewed here.
The celebrations will continue with the ESF 50th Gala Dinner on Wednesday, 6 December 2017. Please join ESF staff and myself from 6pm at the Grand Ballroom, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Early bird prices before 1 November include a three course meal and free flow during the evening are $1,700. Sales of tickets are through the ESF website at http://www.esf.edu.hk/gala.
Yours,
Christopher Sammons
