Principal’s Message

Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,

Last week we congratulated Danya Bhasin for the work she has undertaken to feed Hong Kong. It began three years ago when West Island collected 200KG of food; this year, Danya’s organisation and leadership meant that we provided over 3000 nutritious meals to people who are homeless and provided a total of 1200kg of food. Just incredible. I am really pleased that Danya received her own award from the charity to recognise this remarkable achievement. It was also a pleasure to recognise Lucas Padilha who collected the most amount of food individually, the generosity and commitment by everyone is to be celebrated and commended. Thank you.

We started on Monday this week with the achievements of Roshan Relwani who has been awarded third place in the Hong Kong Speech Festival reading Chinese poetry. To have been placed in the most prestigious speech event in Hong Kong competing against 100 local and international schools is a great personal success. Not least because Chinese is not Roshan’s first language and he was up against a majority of native speakers. At West Island, Roshan is the only non-Chinese student studying with the first language group.

Jody Lee kicks off the commendations for sports. He is showing real promise in the swim lanes having broken two ISSF Swimming records and placed first in three categories last week. Mr Lant said to me that he has not seen as much talent since teaching Geoffrey Cheah. Wednesday evening was the A grade final where we played against DBS for the third time in a row. Although beaten, we did score a goal this year and the commitment of the boys was never in question. After the game I walked with a spectator who didn’t know who I was and talked about the team spirit and skill of the boys, I couldn’t agree more and my head was held high watching this group of boys play. It was a fine performance and it feels as though it was one step closer to a win…….next year…..

Several successes amongst our students for being selected as part of various Hong Kong sides this week. A number of boys and girls have earned their places for NAG training and the Christmas period games. Raunaq Kapur is breaking into the national side at the age of 14 having been selected to represent Hong Kong in the U16 Asian Cricket tour; and, Erin Deayton has been selected to appear in the Singapore Rugby Tournament this weekend. Commitment and courage is paying off well for these students, well done to you all.

Looking ahead, it is a real pleasure to be saying “Happy December” and to be thinking about family time. Next week is the start of our community events with the Christmas Market and evening Concert. Following that, we have Bryony Lavery’s ‘More Light’ by Circle in the Water on 13 December, a few remaining tickets available for you to support our Drama students.

Happy December.

Yours,
Christopher Sammons
(Principal)
