Principal’s Message
Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends of WIS,
It was great to see parents and supporters last weekend at the Jing Ying final. After seven years, the West Island Under 20 Football team regained the cup. It was a great game and the boys held up their play much better than previous matches with a strong defensive and midfield line up. The penalties were equally tense which pleased the crowd and the final goal will be remembered for some time to come. Congratulations to Mr Harding for his ongoing support and coaching of the team.
Equal praise goes to the D Grade Boys Rugby team who were crowned HKSRU Inter School Rugby champions last night at the Kings Park finals. A very talented group of players represented WIS this year and produced some fantastic flowing rugby. The team secured wins in all four games during the competition.
Our Junior Hockey team have also played against HYS this week (also known as the unbeatable team). With determination and commitment, the team ended up with a draw which was a great success.
Well done to all of committed and talented sports teams and their teachers.
Wednesday was a great day to listen to the Year 9 Personal Projects. I have learned there are seven more dimensions from the last time I touched base with Physics, how a shoe is constructed, how net neutrality laws are impacting on business, the dire state of our oceans and what the future of artificial intelligence holds. Students have really enjoyed presenting their learning and are to be commended for the inquiries they have pursued.
Wednesday evening was a precious evening for me to be in the moment with Art students. The opening of the IB Art Show was inspiring, challenging, provoking and creative – everything that it should be. I am so personally motivated by the way in which our Art Faculty allow each student the space to explore content and styles which are meaningful to them. It leads to the most impressive, individual stories and this year’s emerging artists are no exception. Thank you to Ms Dryland and Ms Bemet for being the grit that make these pearls and the many hours of individualised feedback and support. Something to be proud of.
The launch of our Mindfulness Book this week has been well received and I am immensely proud of the process which Kyle Kelleher and Olivia Wilcockson have led students through. The thinking, the work and the outcome are a collective effort to give meaningful strategies for other peers in times of despair or crisis. Make time this Easter to sit down, talk it through and learn about being BOLD and thinking ABC with your child.
Whilst a number of students are finishing off coursework and beginning to review learning in preparation for June exams, we have this year’s Awards Ceremony on Thursday 29 March. A reminder that we finish for Easter at the end of this ceremony and buses will take children home from 12.30pm.
Yours,
Christopher Sammons
