Student in the Arts: Matthew Wong
Year 11 student Matthew Wong was very fortunate last week to have an opportunity of a lifetime.
He was invited to perform for Yo-Yo Ma in a masterclass at the HK Academy of Performing Arts (APA). Matthew plays cello, and has been playing since he was seven years old, and achieved his Diploma of Music (cello) when he was 13 years. Matthew studies IGCSE music, is a member of the school’s Sinfonia orchestra and the HKAPA Junior Music Programme, which offers comprehensive specialist music tuition for talented young musicians across HK. Matthew was one of four cellists invited to play for Yo-Yo Ma.
He was the youngest player given the privilege to learn from Ma, who taught him the importance of using your imagination to recreate music, and to make links between different music across time, place and culture.
Bravo, Matthew!
