Dynasty Day Round Up By Alexandra & Ella

Friday 9 September marked the first Dynasty Day of the academic year, celebrating both Yuan and Tang dynasties in a crazy burst of green and purple. The student leadership team asked the school, “YuanaTango?”, in honour of the dance-themed activities that took place during lunchtime. In addition to the heightened dynasty spirit and enthusiasm throughout the school, the key focus of the celebration was to raise money for the school’s Overseas Community Partners.

One of the biggest events of the day was the first ever West Island School Bake Off which transformed the traditional bake sale into a competitive, brilliant display of culinary talent. The categories included the “Healthiest Bake”, the “Best Savoury Bake”, the “Best Tart”, the “Best Cake” and so on and so forth. The multi-purpose hall was flooded with students clambering over one another to get a taste of one of these amazing creations, and the faces of the students leaving the hall reflected the yearly effort that students go through to put a smile on the faces of their peers.

Other stalls around the school involved sales of ice lolly sales by Head Students and Dynasty Leaders, as well as those set up by overseas service activities, raising awareness for each good cause. These stalls ranged from sorbet sales to m’n’m counting, and reminded the students of where the money that they were spending was going and what it could achieve. In keeping with the day’s “healthy living” theme, the school community was vibrantly dressed in sweatbands, leggings and other workout gear, whilst the dynasty leaders interrupted the lunch hour with a zumba flash mob. Other students gave spectacular musical performances, adding to the celebratory atmosphere of the day.

In total, an overwhelming HKD 32,203.60 was raised for the school’s Overseas Community Partners, the largest sum raised to date! This money is a combined total of the sales made at the numerous stalls during the lunchtime celebrations and the money students brought in that morning so that they could wear their active themed clothing for the day.

At West Island School, we strive to remember our “5 C’s”, one of them being “Compassion”. Organising a day where we can simultaneously reinforce the importance of dynasty spirit while raising money for service committees that need it, demonstrates our devotion to our school’s values. We are all delighted by this fantastic turnout in both funds raised and whole-school participation and enjoyment!
