West Island at the HKRFU U12 World Challenge Cup
On Saturday 16 September Hong Kong RFU recently held a Hong Kong wide invitational rugby tournament for U12, mostly Year 7 students at King’s Park. In total over 200 youth players represented 20 different teams.
It is great to report that West Island School was represented in depth in this tournament. In total West Island School was represented by 20 players, both girls and boys. The West Island School players represented a diverse range of countries including Australia, Canada, France, Hong Kong, Ireland, Kenya, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Scotland and South Africa.
The tournament was a great display of youth rugby at its best. There was a real sense of meritocracy amongst the teams. The scratch nature of the teams successfully encouraged the children played rugby to the very best of their ability throughout the whole day!
Although all the players played amazing rugby throughout the day it is great to report that West Island School was represented with players participating in both teams in the final where South Africa beat PNG 3-2 and the 3rd and 4th place final where Tonga beat the USA 3 -1
Director of Rugby Mr Paul Madden said, “I know this is a club based tournament but I think it is a great example of where schools and clubs can work more closely together for the betterment of youth rugby. From a school’s rugby perspective this tournament falls at a perfect time as most of the players have just moved up to Year 7 and information on active players is vital. As a school we can both celebrate the students participation in this event and information on their participation provides valuable information about active players.”
Congratulations to the following students for their amazing participation in this great event: Callum, Hugo,Jennifer, Matthew, Orla, Blaze, Oscar, Lucy, Jonus, Joshua, Kurtis, Miriam, Matthew, Beatrice, Adrian, Mei, Barney and Samantha.
The future is looking good for West Island School Rugby. If you are interested in playing rugby please come down to Sandy Bay for training on Mondays immediately after school. We welcome everyone regardless of experience.
