WIS Boys Tennis Team Promoted to HKSSF Division 1
The WIS Boys Tennis Team had an extremely successful season, securing promotion to HKSSF Division 1 for only the second time in West Island School history. The team consisted of: Amaan Ismail, Matthew Wong, Pravir Mirpuri, Zaq Sawyer Coffey, Jonathan Wong, Kaj Sawyer Coffey, Brendan Liang, Raul Harjani and Jason Blight. We had an unbelievable year, winning all our matches in the group stages and progressing through to the playoffs with ease, where we managed to secure 2nd place in the division with three wins and an unfortunate loss to SIS.
Our third and most important win came last week in our final match against SYSS. Before the match even started, we knew the match was an important one, as the winner of the match would secure promotion to Division 1. It was an epic match that lived up to its hype as we all played some outstanding tennis, some of the best we have played all season. After the first round of matches we were down 1-2, therefore, we knew that we needed to regroup to stand a chance against our strong opponents. We successfully did so as we stepped up our game play and evened the score at 3-3 going into the final round of matches. In the final round of matches, with the scores level at 4-4, we all looked on from the sidelines as the decisive match between our thirds seeds Kaj and Jonathan and their second seeds was at play. Things were not looking good as after a display of long rallies, Kaj and Jonathan found themselves down 5-4 and facing three match points at 0-40. However, with the ongoing encouragement and support from the team, the boys spectacularly saved the three match points and held their service to even the scores at 5-5. From then on, they never looked back using their boost in confidence and the shift in momentum to eventually win the match 7-5, securing our 2nd position in the league as well as our promotion to Division 1. It was an incredible match that marked the end of an amazing season.
A special thanks to Mr McNair, Mr Lant, Lok Chan and Coach David for their ongoing encouragement, involvement and commitment to the team this season. We look forward to next season where we will be competing against the very top schools in the HKSSF Division 1.
