WIS Students with HK Public Health Initiative program

Well done to the following group of students who are part of a HK Public Health Initiative (HKPHI) program which pairs high school students with medical/public health students to plan awareness raising campaigns around key health issues: Kuvira Munshi, Tia Nagrani, Rachel Kan, Ethan Nicholas and Matthew Wong.

This year they will be focusing on HPV.

The students had to say the following:

HKPHI Reflection

HKPHI is an organisation unlike any other in Hong Kong, in regards to its aims, its goals and most importantly, its members. As an inter professional platform led by students of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, HKPHI recruits volunteers annually, training them to become educators and advocates in public health issues of all degrees. HKPHI and its associates then aim throughout the year to increase the awareness of various public health issues to which affect the general population of Hong Kong.

What did we do?
The events of the day revolved around looking into HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). We began with an introductory 2 hour lecture going into detail as to HPVs causes, effects, prevention and possible treatments. We were then assigned a current medical student, who could provide their clinical insights and knowledge to us, in addition to a Public Health student who could provide practical approaches in health education and prevention.

What are the follow-ons?

It is these individuals with whom we join hands, from planning to implementation stages, in order to produce evidence-based education sessions for each of our respective schools, to raise awareness of viruses and diseases which are more common than we know, and that we are far more susceptible to than we initially expect.
